Snapchat Memories vs camera roll: what's the difference?

Snapchat Memories and your camera roll look similar, both are grids of your photos and videos, but they are two completely separate stores in two different places. Mixing them up is how people end up thinking they have a backup when they do not. Here is the plain version.

What's the difference between Snapchat Memories and my camera roll?

Snapchat Memories is storage inside the Snapchat app, held on Snapchat's servers and only viewable in Snapchat. Your camera roll is the Photos library on your iPhone, held on your own device. A snap saved to Memories does not automatically appear in your camera roll; they are two separate places, and a memory can live in one without being in the other.

Are Snapchat Memories saved to my camera roll?

Not by default. When you save a snap to Memories, it goes into Snapchat's own storage, not your camera roll, unless you have set Snapchat to save to both. That is why your Memories can hold years of photos while your Photos app shows none of them.

Why aren't my Snapchat Memories in my Photos app?

Because Memories are stored inside Snapchat, not on your device's photo library. The Photos app only shows media that is actually on your iPhone or in your iCloud Photos. To see your Memories there, you have to bring a copy out of Snapchat, either by saving them or by exporting your data.

This distinction matters more than it used to. Now that free Memories storage is capped at 5GB, the copy that is only in Snapchat is also the copy you could lose. The copy in your own camera roll is the one that is unconditionally yours.

How do I move Snapchat Memories to my camera roll?

For a few, open a memory in Snapchat and use the share or export option to save it to your camera roll. For a whole library, request your data through Snapchat's My Data export, download the zip files, and import them into your photo library. The export route keeps the original dates and locations, which saving one by one does not.

How do I save future snaps to both Memories and my camera roll?

In Snapchat, open Settings, then Memories, then Save Destinations, and choose Memories and Camera Roll. From then on, every snap you save goes to both places at once. This only affects new snaps; your existing Memories still need the export to reach your camera roll.
